Founding Director and Secretary
Dr. Knox is an expert in force protection and antiterrorism, having developed and implemented the engineering portion of the Defense Department's vulnerability assessment program. Since 1996 he has advised military installations worldwide on ways to improve their protection from terrorist weapon attacks. Upon joining ARA in 1998, he has directed Air Force Research Laboratory research in protective structures, weapons effects, blast mitigation, improvised explosive device disablement and risk analysis. He is currently leading Air Force/Navy/industry efforts to develop antiterrorism risk reduction software, and continues to teach and consult with military organizations on methods to improve their protection from terrorist attack.
Dr. Knox retired as an Air Force civil engineering officer in 1998. During his 20-year USAF career, he directed research in bomb damage repair of pavements and in hard target defeat; directed design and construction of airbase facilities; taught engineering at the Air Force Academy; assessed NATO facilities; and developed the force protection program for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. He was a key member of the DoD analysis team evaluating the Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia.
